In discussing body piercing ? the history of body piercing, it is clear this is not a new phenomenon to human beings. It has been practiced for over 30,000 years by communities all over the world. It holds great cultural and religious meanings. There are also piercings for various medical benefits and therapies. Various regions and parts are pierced for ornaments including the ears, nose, mouth and the belly button (especially for women).
In some cultures all people regardless of age take part in this practice, however in the western world in current times it tends to be favored by the young. Hindus famously practice body art and there are also many cults across the world that do too. In the west today the most common reason for piercings is for fashion whereas cultures elsewhere around the world tend to do it for religious or cultural reasons.
It can be quite difficult to trace the history of this practice however evidence of it has been found in Egyptian tombs that are about five thousand years old. It is believed that in this civilization these body decorations were a sign of high status. The pierced Mummy that was found was believed to be a rich man and he had ear plugs which were the original way of being pierced.
The pharaohs of Egypt were the only people allowed to have their belly buttons pierced and this proves that belly buttons have not started being pierced today. Any other subject even of the royal family was not allowed to adorn themselves in these piercings which were made of gold.
In biblical times body jewelry was again used as a status symbol. Jewelry was worn to show wealth and was often used as a form of dowry when a woman was getting married. In much the same way as today it was also worn for fashion reasons and to enhance ones beauty.
In the Roman empire, piercings were used as both a mark of importance and also of slavery. Gladiators were considered to be slaves and they were not allowed to engage in sexual intercourse. This rule was enforced by piercing the genitals so that they could not partake in sexual activities. The piercing of the nipples was a sign that you were loyal to the empire and many centurions had these adornments to symbolize their strength and virility.
Among the ancient Mayan empire peoples and some American Indians, they practiced it on the tongue for religious reasons. It was said to bring them closer to their gods as it was a form of ritual bloodletting. Their warriors had their noses pierced to achieve a frightening look.
These practices went out of fashion during certain periods in history, particularly in the West where the church condemned it and made it a sin.
Body adornments began to get popular again during the Elizabethan period. It was most popular among sailors and travelers, so it was mostly men that wore piercings. Nowadays it is more common in women and the most common part to pierce is the ears.
Different cultural events, like the emergence of rock and roll music, brought body piercing back into fashion. At this particular time, the trend was to have more unusual parts of the body pierced, like the nipples and the genitals. It is usual for conservative women to wear one pair of earrings.
Tattoos for women have become more popular over the last decade. More and more women are choosing to get colorful body art and body piercing.
